What is a Sentence ?

Sentence is a group of words which express a complete sense is called a sentence.

For Example:

  1. We are Pakistani.
  2. He is boy.

Kinds of Sentences (Meaning Wise):

There are six kinds of sentences on the basis of their meanings

  1. Declarative (Positive) sentence
  2. Negative sentence
  3. Interrogative sentence
  4. Imperative sentence
  5. Exclamatory Sentence
  6. Optative Sentence

Declarative (Positive) Sentences: Definition with Examples:

Declarative sentences are a type of sentence that makes a statement or declares a fact. They are the most common type of sentence in the English language and are used to provide information, state facts, or explain something. Declarative sentences typically follow a specific structure and end with a period (full stop).

Positive Sentence:

If a statement / sentence is positive, it is called a "Positive sentence". i.e.

For Example:

  2. I am a student.
  3. You are a girl
  4. They are my class fellows
  5. We have balls.
  6. She is happy.

Negative sentence:

If a sentence / statement is negative, it is called "Negative sentence". i.e.

For Example:

  1. He is not a teacher.

  5. We do not have balls.
  6. She is not happy.

Interrogative Sentences: Definition with Examples:

Interrogative sentences are sentences that ask a direct question and always end with a question mark. They are used to obtain information, request clarification, express interest, or gain permission. If in a statement / sentence, something is asked, it is called "Interrogative sentence". i.e.

Types of Interrogative Sentences

Yes / No Questions:

The answer is either "yes" or "no".

Example: Is it raining?

"Question Word" Questions:

The answer provides information.

Example: Why are you bored?

Choice Questions:

The answer is one of the choices given in the question.

Example: Do you want salsa dip or cheese dip?

A sentence that expresses command, advice, request or makes some prohibition is called an "Imperative sentence". i.e.

Exclamatory Sentences: Definition with Examples:

Exclamatory sentences are kinds of sentences that express strong emotions or feelings. It is a sentence that expresses some feelings like happiness, sadness, wonder or sorrow.

For Example:

  1. Alas! I am undone.
  2. Aha! We have won the match.
  3. Hurrah! My father has come.
  4. What a beautiful bird it is!

Optative Sentences: Definition with Examples

Optative Sentences express some wish, hope or desire.

For Examples
