Adjective: Definition, Types and Examples

The words which tell something more or describe or qualify a noun or pronoun are called "The adjective".

For Example:

  1. She is a nice girl.
  2. He is an honest man.
  3. Lahore is a large city.
  4. Apple is red.

Possessive Adjective:

Possessive adjective is word that expresses the ownership or possession of noun and pronoun. It answer the question "Whose?"

Examples are: his, our, her, their, its, your, and my

  1. This is his bag.
  2. It is my book.

Absolute Adjective:

An adjective which generally cannot be intensified or captured. Superlative Degree Comparative Degree Adjectives,

For Example: perfect, eternal, unique, infinite, equal, unanimous, final, dead, total, fatal, probably, supreme

Adjective of Quality:

Adjective of Quality is a word which is used to showing the kind of quality of nouns or pronouns in a sentence is called Adjective of Quality.

For Example: rich, fresh, poor, active, honest, good, wise, foolish

  1. She is an honest woman.
  2. Quaid-e-Azam was wise man.

Adjective of Quantity:

When an adjective states the quantity (how much? how many?) of the noun or pronoun it qualifies, it is called an adjective of quantity.

For Example: little, half, enough, much

  1. You have no sense.
  2. He has lost all his wealth.

Adjective of Numeral:

Numeral adjectives are the words that are used to express numbers of the noun or pronoun.

For Example: three, each, four, any, some, few, sixth, many

  1. Farah won the 2nd price
  2. Some dreams are like reality.
  3. A thousand pound.

For example:

Akbar has ten books, but Nadia has twenty two books. One and Two are both adjectives.

Sometimes adjectives of number are not precise.

For Example:

  1. A few days
  2. Many days

Adjective of Shape:

The adjective of shape tell us about us the shape of adjective

For Example: broad, chubby, crooked, deep, flat, high, low, narrow, round, skinny, square, steep

Adjective of Color:

The adjective which tell us color of noun or pronoun is called adjective of color.

For Example: orange, yellow, blue, purple, black, white, green, red

Interrogative Adjective:

Interrogative Adjective is that word that is used to ask questions.

For Example: Where, Why, When, What

Adjective of Size:

Size is a volume or mass which takes specific space.

For Example: big, colossal, immense, large, petite, puny

Proper Adjective:

It formed from a proper noun.

For Example:

English, Bengali, Pakistani, Indian, Asian, Punjabi Teeny teeny-tiny, American, Arabian

  1. I speak English language.
  2. Pakistani mango is better than Indian mango.

Demonstrative Adjective:

It points out which person are things is meant.

For Example: This, That, These, Those

  1. This girl is younger than Salman.
  2. I hate such things.

Distributive Adjective:

It describes a person place or a thing separately.

For Example:

Either, Neither, Each, Every

Each girl will get a prize.

Every dog has his day.

Degrees of Adjective:

There are three degrees of comparison:

Positive Degree:

The positive degree is used to describe the simple quality of an object.i.e.

For Example: Tally, Warm, Thin, Able, Bright

She is clever

He is wise boy I am old.

Comparative Degree:

The adjective which is used to compare the quality of two or more noun, is called "Comparative Degree". i.e.

For Example:

  1. He is wiser than his brother
  2. I am older than you.

Superlative Degree:

For Example:

  1. He is the wisest among all.
  2. She is the cleverest among her friends.
  3. I am the oldest in the class.
  4. Karachi is the biggest city of Pakistan.
  5. This table is the cheapest of all.
